An Advanced Optimisation Based Approach for Wastewater Network Planning

An Advanced Optimisation Based Approach for Wastewater Network Planning

Presented by STRIDE (formerly EnginSoft UK) at the 2024 NAFEMS UK Conference.

This presentation introduces an advanced optimisation-based methodology developed by STRIDE (formerly EnginSoft UK), designed to help water companies plan upgrades more effectively. By combining multi-objective optimisation with existing 1D hydraulic models, the approach identifies the lowest-cost, lowest-risk combinations of network interventions, from pipe and pump upgrades to SuDS and storage while ensuring flood protection and treatment compliance.

Using strategicGIANT and HEEDS, the workflow transforms weeks of simulation effort into rapid, automated studies that explore thousands of upgrade combinations. The result:

  • Robust, auditable decisions informed by data and engineering insight.
  • Confidence in optimal solutions, eliminating endless “what ifs.”
  • Faster regional planning that supports business plan submissions and long-term resilience goals.

The outcome is a repeatable, company-wide optimisation framework that makes best use of hydraulic modelling assets and delivers measurable business value across DWMP, AMP8, and beyond.
